The United States Team won a record 6 medals in the Olympics in 2008 and fencing is enjoying a surge in popularity. However, fencing has its origins in Europe over 300 years ago. Lafayette's grandfather commanded the Black Musketeers for a time and Lafyaette himself became a member of that elite unit when he was only 14. The Lafayette Open is sanctioned by the North Carolina division of the United States Fencing Association. There will also be an unsantioned open foil competition for ages 7 through 12 on Friday September 10 at 7pm. Spectators Admitted free.
